Stream NFL Games Affordably This Season
Your Ultimate Guide to Watching Local and Out-of-Market Games Without Breaking the Bank
Quick Summary: Use an antenna, Amazon Prime and NFL+ Premium to catch the games you want, plus RedZone. A live TV subscription remains the only way to watch Monday Night Football on your TV.
If you’re interested in additional out-of-market games, consider adding NFL Sunday Ticket.
Important: This Friday’s game will be available exclusively on Peacock and will not air on NBC.
Note: If you’re still using cable or satellite, this guide might not be as helpful. There could be cheaper streaming options for the same content, but that’s a topic for another article..
Streaming Local Games
If you’re primarily interested in your local team, here’s how to watch those games (and some others).
Check What You Can Get Via Antenna
Visit AnntennaWeb to see which channels are available in your area with an antenna. The site will help you determine if you can access FOX, NBC, ABC, and CBS with an inexpensive antenna or if you’ll need a more powerful setup.
If you can receive these channels without issues, you’re all set! You can skip to the Monday and Thursday Night Football section.
Only Use 1 Antenna with HD HomeRun
If you opt for an antenna, consider using an HD HomeRun device. Instead of connecting your antenna directly to a TV, plug it into the HD HomeRun, which then streams to your TVs through the HD HomeRun app. This setup supports various devices, including FireTV, Roku, and Apple TV (via the Channels app).
Additionally, you can set up a DVR for your antenna using HDHomeRun and Plex.
Local Games without an Antenna
If an antenna isn’t an option, you’ll need a live TV subscription. NFL+ Premium offers your local and primetime games for $15/month or $100 for the entire season. However, the games can only be streamed on a phone or tablet and Airplay/Google Cast won’t work.
NFL+ Premium also includes NFL RedZone, a fantastic way to catch all the action on Sundays.
You can stream local NBC and CBS games via Peacock and Paramount+, respectively.
Monday & Thursday Night Football
Amazon Prime provides access to Thursday night games, but Monday Night will require a live TV subscription with access to ESPN. The cheapest way I found to get access is Sling’s Orange Package.
Out-of-Market Games
With the options above, you’ll have access to most of the games you want. However, for full coverage, including out-of-market games, you’ll need to subscribe to NFL Sunday Ticket.
Summary
Navigating the various options to watch NFL games can be complex, but by combining an antenna, select streaming services, and NFL+ Premium, you can catch the games you want without a traditional cable subscription. For local games, an antenna or NFL+ Premium on your mobile device are cost-effective solutions. For primetime games, Amazon Prime covers Thursday nights, while a live TV streaming service like Sling’s Orange Package will get you Monday Night Football on ESPN.
Don’t forget to subscribe to Peacock for this Friday night’s game, and if you’re a fan of out-of-market matchups, NFL Sunday Ticket is your best bet. Tailor your setup based on your needs and enjoy the season!
I was talking to a hardcore NFL/college FB friend, and we were scratching our heads trying to understand the logic of making it so hard to see games in this transition to streaming. I know they did the math, so I guess the endgame is to drive subscriptions to every streaming platform, I just wonder if they are going to piss off a lotta fans. Maybe they figured this is the year to go big and then adjust if they got it wrong.
